Breaking Stigmas, Nurturing Well-Being

Teenage pregnancy remains a significant concern in Kisumu County. In 2020, the county reported a 17% rate of teenage pregnancies, a slight decrease from 20% in 2019. More recent data from 2022 indicates a teenage pregnancy rate of 11%, suggesting some progress in addressing the issue.

Single mothers, teenage mothers and young girls face significant socio-economic challenges that hinder their ability to achieve self-sufficiency and improve their quality of life . These groups often experience high levels of poverty, limited access to education, inadequate childcare support and social stigma which is a disadvantage to them.

Statistics indicate that single-parent household particularly those led by young mothers are more likely to live more below the poverty line, which adversely affects their children’s well-being and future opportunities. Additionally, teenage mothers frequently drop out of school, leading to lower earning potential and limited career opportunities. Young girls especially in poor communities often lack mentorship and resources which are crucial for their personal and professional development.

Without targeted interventions, these challenges will continue to undermine the potential of these vulnerable populations, perpetuating cycles of poverty and limiting their contribution to society. Our Organization seeks funding to implement comprehensive support programs that provide educational resources, childcare services, mentorship, and economic empowerment initiatives aimed at breaking this cycles and fostering resilience among single mothers, teenage mothers and young girls.

The objective of the project is to improve the quality of life for teenage and single moms lives including mental health and safety. The target population are single moms and teenagers  (age 12+) in Kisumu East and Kisumu Central, particularly those who are economically disadvantaged, single parenting, out of school or facing health challenges.
